Planning & Basics

We recommend a minimum of 7-10 days to properly experience Palawan. This would give you enough time to visit at least two major destinations (e.g., El Nido and Coron, or Puerto Princesa and El Nido). If you have 14 days, you could comfortably explore all three major areas (Puerto Princesa, El Nido, and Coron) with time for relaxation.

Here's a sample distribution:

  • Puerto Princesa: 2-3 days (Underground River, Honda Bay, city tour)
  • El Nido: 4-5 days (island hopping, beaches, relaxation)
  • Coron: 3-4 days (lagoons, lakes, wreck diving)
  • Transit between destinations: 1-2 days

The best time to visit Palawan is during the dry season from November to May. The peak tourist season is from December to April when the weather is consistently sunny with less rainfall, making it ideal for island hopping, diving, and beach activities.

Specific months to consider:

  • December to February: Pleasant temperatures, low humidity, but high tourist season with higher prices.
  • March to May: Hotter temperatures but excellent visibility for diving. May starts to see occasional rain.
  • June to October: Rainy season with potential typhoons, but lower prices and fewer tourists. Many days still have good weather between rain showers.
  • November: Transitional month with improving weather and before the peak season crowds arrive.

As part of the Philippines, visa requirements for Palawan depend on your nationality. Many countries receive a 30-day visa-free entry, including:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • European Union countries
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Japan
  • Singapore
  • Malaysia
  • And many others

If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you can apply for a visa extension while in the Philippines. For the most current information, please check with the Philippine Embassy or Consulate in your country before traveling.

Each of Palawan's major destinations offers a different experience:

El Nido

Known for stunning limestone cliffs, lagoons, and white sand beaches. The main draw is island hopping tours to explore the Bacuit Archipelago. It has developed significantly in recent years with more resorts and dining options.

Coron

Famous for crystal-clear lagoons (Kayangan and Barracuda), Japanese shipwrecks for diving, and stunning viewpoints. It generally feels less crowded than El Nido but has fewer beaches. Excellent for wreck diving and snorkeling.

Puerto Princesa

The capital city and main entry point to Palawan. Home to the UNESCO World Heritage Underground River, Honda Bay island hopping, and more urban amenities. It's more developed with shopping malls, larger restaurants, and better infrastructure.

If you can't visit all three, consider your priorities: El Nido for classic Palawan limestone scenery and beaches, Coron for diving and lagoons, or Puerto Princesa for easier access and the Underground River.

Tricycles

The main form of public transportation in all Palawan towns. These are motorcycles with covered sidecars that can fit 2-4 passengers (sometimes more). Fares range from ₱20-₱50 for short trips within town centers, or ₱150-₱300 for longer distances or private charters.
